TAROT

What is the Tarot, and how does it work?

“ The Tarot helps us handle whatever is around the corner, in the best possible way.”    – Mary K. Greer

The Tarot originates from a European card playing system called Tarocchini, (Italian), or Tarocchi, (French).  The use of Tarot dates back to around the mid 15th century, however, images from Tarot cards have been found carved into the walls of Egypt and other ancient cultures long before the appearance of the actual card decks.  Some of the oldest decks found are now secured within art galleries in Milan, Italy.  Whether the Tarot is used for card playing, divination, or self exploration, it’s one of the most powerful self-help tools on the market today.

The earliest Tarot decks discovered date back to the 1300s, during the overlap of of the Renaissance and Medieval times.  There was a huge resurgence of Tarot in the 1960s during the hippy movement, and once again at the turn of the century, 2000.

What seems obvious, is that Tarot arises in society during times of great change.  Tarot becomes popular, with increased deck sales, when people decide to take the power back into their own hands, begin to trust their own inner voice, and make choices for their own well being.  When humanity evolves and grows to a certain point, no longer is it necessary to believe or turn over one’s power to outer authorities, such as politicians, medical doctors, religious leaders, or others in control of their own decisions and personal power.

Some important, pivotal figures to know of in the world of Tarot are;  Aleister Crowley, an English Occultist, who in 1898 was initiated into the esoteric Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn, where  he then founded the religion and philosophy of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Aeon of Horus in the early 20th century.  The Thoth Tarot deck, painted by Lady Frieda Harris, was instructed and guided by Aleister Crowley.

Arthur Edward Waite, and Pamela Coleman Smith, were the creators and artists of the Rider Waite Tarot.  Rider was the publishing company out of London, England who published the first decks in the early 1900s, Arthur Waite was the creator of the deck, and Pamela Coleman Smith, (aka Pixie), was the very talented artist who painted the images for the deck.  The Rider Waite Smith deck (RWS), is used widely around the world, and is the most common deck to learn from when starting off with the Tarot.

The Tarot contains 78 cards in a deck.  The first 22 cards are called, “Major Arcana”.  Arcana stems from the latin word, “arcanum”, meaning hidden knowledge, or ancient secret mysteries that may or may not unfold for the initiate”.  We see traces and clues to these mysteries throughout the deck in cards such as; The High Priestess, The Hierophant, The Hermit, Judgment, and really all of the major arcana cards. The major arcana cards represent  the 5th element of spirit, or the spiritual lessons in a reading, and are the cards that stand out which we want to pay close attention to for wisdom and guidance.

The remaining 56 cards are comprised of the minor arcana cards, are the “chop wood, carry water” cards, which point to the everyday happenings in life which contain the tools, elements, numerology, and imagery to help identify with what we’re experiencing on a mundane level in life. The 16 court cards within the minor arcana make up the unique way of describing people in our lives, their personalities and roles they play.

How does the Tarot work?

The amazing beauty of a Tarot Reading is that you get a new perspective about what matters most to you.

How does the world spin on it’s axis?  What is it that keeps our hearts beating?  It is this same magic or mystery that allows the Tarot to bring forth answers and insight for us.

The Tarot makes what’s unknown, known.
